The 25th of March marks the Birthday of Venice.

By tradition, the birth of the city of Venice is set to be the 25th of March, 421 AD. That’s when the Church of San Giacomo was dedicated on the small island of Rialto.

The date also handily coincides with the Annunciation.

Of course there were already people living there on the various islands in the lagoon, and fishing, but that was picked as a convenient date to mark when the city really got going.

Venice has many unique culinary traditions different from the rest of Italy. Today, you could go out to a restaurant that specializes in Venetian food, or, try making a Venetian recipe at home. If nothing else, have some nice Italian food and raise a glass of wine to Venice! If you haven’t been there yet, maybe you will someday!
